Improved Variety of a Classic, Nostalgic Tree

Streets and neighborhoods all over America used to be lined with the comforting shade of the American Elm…but then disease wiped out the population.

Now you can bring back the feeling of turn of the century America by planting the Princeton Elm in your yard.

There’s so much to love about this tree…

Disease resistant – more resistant to the diseases and pests that plague other elms, you can relax knowing you’re planting a tree that’s going to stay healthy.

No maintenance – forget constant pruning, spraying, watering and fertilizing… this native tree loves to grow

Extremely tolerant – from wind and salt to wet and dry conditions, there’s not much that can wear this hardy, sturdy tree down.

This shade tree grows to 50-70 feet with a canopy of 30-50 feet

Plant near your home to provide cost-cutting shade, or plant in a wide open space to create the perfect summer picnic spot.

The summery green leaves turn a bright yellow in fall adding ornamental value to your autumn landscape.

Growing 3-6 feet each year once established, you’ll have a classic American shade tree in your yard in no time at all.

Plant your Princeton Elm this year. Order yours today!

Planting & Care

The Princeton Elm is easy to plant in your yard. Because of its tolerance to soil conditions, you can plant this tree anywhere you like. Plant in full sun or partial shade where it will receive at least 4 hours of sun each day. Adding mulch to the base of your tree will help keep the moisture in and prevent weeds and grass competition. You don't need to add anything to your soil when planting.

Watering: This tree can tolerate wet or dry conditions. Be sure to water the tree weekly in its young life to ensure proper growth. If it rains, you don't need to water your Princeton Elm at all. After a couple years, you only need to water the tree during very dry spells.

Pruning: You don't need to prune the Princeton Elm, but it can be helpful to remove dead bark and branches in the fall.

Perfect shade tree

As usual, the tree arrived well packed, and in a potted container. Planted it and it is already begun to grow.

6-8 ft Elm

This 6-8 ft. Elm came well packaged. Several dead leaves. We planted it in August. It seems to be doing well. It sprouted a few new leaves after it was planted.

Update after 4 years.

Update after 4 years: Never new a tree could grow so fast! Planted a 4 footer in 2020 here in CT and now 26 ft tall! Developing into a lovely narrow vase-shape. The many limbs arch sharply upward and the way they catch the breeze is enchanting. The leaves change their shadings depending on the angle of the sun providng varied highlights throughout the day. I love this tree and am so glad I planted it front and center next to the street (where elms are typically situated). I gave it no special care except for cutting back one of the top limbs to select for the most dominant leader. Also wrapped some 1/2 inch galvanized wire mesh around the trunk because the deer rubbed the bark off one side of the trunk during the rut. But it's recovering quickly and should be fine in the long run. I just wish I had room for several more!

Tree arrived fine

Princeton American elm tree arrived fine. I keep watering the tree in preparation for planting on about Aug. 19. Leaves look pretty good, and with a few newer leaves on the tree.

Nice.

I am not sure. It was much, much smaller than I expected. I am glad to know it is fast growing and I Iook forward to seeing it grow. The good news is we are getting a lot of rain this summer so the ground does not dry out much.
