Painted Lady Tropical Hibiscus Tree

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Zones 9-11: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade, and prepare the soil with good drainage to promote healthy growth. Dig a hole that is twice the width of the root ball and as deep as the container. Place the tree in the center of the hole, fill with soil, and gently pat down to remove air pockets.

Zones 3-8: Replant in a container slightly larger container, using standard potting mix. Move plants indoors in fall when temperatures drop below 50 F at night. Place plants in a sunny, Southern window or use a full spectrum grow light. Alternatively, plants can be left outdoors and treated as annuals, meaning they will die once exposed to freezing temperatures and can be replaced yearly.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year as the tree establishes itself. Water deeply once a week, ensuring the soil drains well to prevent root rot. During dry spells, increase the frequency of watering.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before the growing season begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches and shape the tree to encourage an attractive form. Light pruning can be done throughout the growing season to promote bushier growth and more blooms.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a fertilizer specifically for hibiscus, tropical plants, or palms. Follow the package directions for application rates and frequency. This will ensure vibrant blooms and overall healthy growth throughout the season.
